Deuteronomy 9

Hear, O Yisrael: You are to pass over Jordan (Yarden) this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,

A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom you knowest, and of whom you have heard say, ‘Who can stand before the children of Anak?’

Understand therefore this day, that יהוה your God (Elohim) is He who goeth over before you; as a consuming fire He shall destroy them, and He shall bring them down before your face; so shalt you drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as יהוה hath said unto you.

Speak not you in your heart, after that יהוה your God (Elohim) hath cast them out from before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness יהוה hath brought me in to possess this land’; but for the wickedness of these nations יהוה doth drive them out from before you.

Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, dost you go to possess their land, but for the wickedness of these nations יהוה your God (Elohim) doth drive them out from before you, and that He may perform the word which יהוה sware unto your fathers, Avraham, Isaac (Yitschaq), and Jacob (Yaaqov).

Understand therefore, that יהוה your God (Elohim) giveth you not this good land to possess it because of your righteousness, for you are a stiffnecked people.

Remember, and forget not, how you provokedst יהוה your God (Elohim) to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you didst depart out of the land of Egypt (Mitsrayim), until you came unto this place, you have been rebellious against יהוה.

Also in Horeb (Chorev) you provoked יהוה to wrath, so that יהוה was angry with you to have destroyed you.

When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which יהוה made with you, then I abode in the mountain forty days and forty nights, I neither ate bread nor drink water.

And יהוה delivered unto me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God (Elohim); and on them was written according to all the words, which יהוה spake with you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that יהוה gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

And יהוה said unto me, ‘Arise, get you down quickly from hence; for your people whom you have brought forth out of Egypt (Mitsrayim) have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.’

Furthermore יהוה spake unto me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and, behold, they are stiffnecked people.

Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.

And I looked, and, behold, you had sinned against יהוה your God (Elohim), and had made you a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly out of the way which יהוה had commanded you.

And I took the two tablets, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.

And I fell down before יהוה, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which you sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of יהוה, to provoke Him to anger.

For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith יהוה was wroth against you to destroy you. But יהוה hearkened unto me at that time also.

And יהוה was very angry with Aaron (Aharon) to have destroyed him; and I prayed for Aaron (Aharon) also the same time.

And I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mountain.

And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Qivrot-Hattaavah, you provoked יהוה to wrath.

Likewise when יהוה sent you from Qadesh Barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then you rebelled against the commandment of יהוה your God (Elohim), and you believed Him not, nor hearkened to His voice.

You have been rebellious against יהוה from the day that I knew you.

Thus I fell down before יהוה forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because יהוה had said He would destroy you.

I prayed therefore unto יהוה, and said, ‘O Lord (Adonai) יהוה, destroy not Your people and Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought forth out of Egypt (Mitsrayim) with a mighty hand.

Remember Your servants, Avraham, Isaac (Yitschaq), and Jacob (Yaaqov); look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin;

Lest the land whence You broughtest us out say, “Because יהוה was not able to bring them into the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.”

Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You broughtest out by Your mighty power and by Your outstretched arm.’
